Haiti. The first American cultural melting pot -- where, 400 years ago, magic flowed into blood-soaked sugar cane fields and gave birth to jazz, blues and rock and roll music -- where voudou gave raw, new world power to ancient colonial religions -- where a nation threw off the shackles of human slavery decades before America did -- and where, for nearly 250 years, corrupt rulers gambled with the lives of their poor, starving countrymen, and lost. The world OWED Haiti, even before the earthquake.
